GJD Planning + Design supported ISL Engineering in the design of a network of cycling routes across the North Shore, linking neighbourhoods at the foot of Lions Gate Bridge with Lower Lonsdale and those near Second Narrows Bridge. The bicycle facilities include protected bike lanes, multi-use paths, and neighbourhood street bikeways. In addition to the design work, Gavin and his associates developed position papers to inform design of multi-use paths, bicycle transit integration and policies and practices to accommodate the growing number and variety of electric assist bicycles and micro-mobility vehicles proliferating on the North Shore.
The design process involved developing options for each of the six routes identified, and selecting a preferred option through a multiple accounts evaluation (MAE) process that assessed criteria reflecting community priorities. Preferred options were selected through the MAE and adjusted based on feedback from the Integrated Transportation Committee and key stakeholders, including HUB Cycling and affected property owners. Portions of this network, including protected bike lanes on West 1st Street from MacKay Road to Fell Avenue and on 2nd Street West from Fell to 3rd Street West were implemented using interim design strategies that enabled rapid project delivery and a more flexible and responsive design. Final upgrades and implementation are ongoing.
