TransLink Geometric Design Guide Training
Customized training gives regional and municipal staff design guidance and best practices for creating safe, comfortable cycling and pedestrian facilities.
Client: TransLink (Metro Vancouver’s Regional Transportation Authority)
Gavin Davidson led a day-long Bicycle Facility Design training workshop for regional and municipal staff from throughout Metro Vancouver. The day involved a review of updated bicycle and pedestrian integrated facility design guidance from Transportation Association of Canada’s Geometric Design Guide, supplemented by best practices from National Association of City Transportation Officials (NACTO Urban Streets and Bikeway Design Guides). The training drew upon Gavin’s involvement in the design and construction of many leading roadway innovations including Complete Streets, roundabouts, Dutch-style intersections and other improvements designed to accommodate in comfort and safety, a broad range of vulnerable road users.
Learning outcomes included:
Becoming familiar with, and comfortable using TAC’s GDG to support municipal active transportation facility selection and design
Providing an awareness of other guidance available regionally, nationally and internationally to supplement and complement the TAC GDG
Using interactive group design exercises to allow participants to gain experience using TAC’s GDG and other available guidance to achieve comprehensive active transportation integrated design.
